7mm scale Heljan Hymek
8th July 2007

Having a 4mm example which is superb and only beaten by the Hornby 60 I purchased a 7mm version. I do some 7mm modelling but not Western Region diesels ... until now! Weathering inspiration came from here ... http://www.miac.org.uk/alanb4.htm

Missing hoses, guard irons and brake shoes. I may [ or may not ] be able to live with these shortcomings. I will definitely be modifying the windscreen as this screams 'toy!!!' at me every time I look at it.

Fitting individual etched numbers tested my patience somewhat! If anyone ever attempts this in 4mm scale they would deserve a medal! I brush painted the grilles and roof ports a very dark grey [ cost d'arms tank grey ]. It was then time to start weathering. I sprayed the initial weathering and fading colours. I've used 8 different colours so far. Thank god for acrylics ... a quick spray of thinners then water is all that's needed between the colour changes.

Another view of the initial weathering stage completed. This time with the 'A' end to the left. Engine room grille surrounds somehow avoided all the paint wafting around. Brush and powders will have to suffice for these as I've packed the airbrush away!

The cab roofs look like they've only received a coat of one colour. Much rectification work required me thinks! I also think I'll be breaking my self imposed rule never to use black when weathering as the exhaust port areas are far too light.
